This initiative aims to showcase Australia’s diverse attractions and foster a deeper cultural connection between Australia and Kolkata, leveraging one of the city’s most iconic symbols-the tram.

In Kolkata, the initiative takes a unique and culturally resonant approach by incorporating the city’s beloved tram system, a significant part of its landscape for over 150 years. Since the first tram in 1873, trams have been an integral part of the city’s public transport system, symbolising Kolkata’s historical and cultural legacy. The use of a tram also highlights the many things Australia and India share: trams are also an iconic feature of the city of Melbourne.

The Australian Consulate-General in Kolkata, in collaboration with the city’s transport corporation, decorates a one-bogie tram to highlight the natural beauty and tourism opportunities on offer in Australia. This special tram will provide Kolkata residents with a glimpse of Australia’s stunning destinations, including pristine beaches, the majestic outback, and its vibrant wildlife. The tram aims to inspire Kolkata’s residents. to consider Australia for their next travel adventure.

The tram officially launches from the iconic Esplanade tram depot on June 18, 2024. The launch event will be attended by Australia’s Consul-General in Kolkata, Mr. Hugh Boylan, along with celebrated actress of Indian cinema Raima Sen, and Dr. Saumitra Mohan, IAS, Secretary, Transport Department, Government of West Bengal.

“India is Australia’s fastest-growing and second-largest diaspora community-an integral part of Australia’s rich cultural tapestry. India is among the fastest growing markets for Australian tourism, indians come to Australia to visit family and friends, to study, and to see our wonderful tourist sites. This tram showcases just some of what we have to offer and I hope it will encourage more people to “Come and Say G’day” and visit Australia”, said Mr Hugh Boylan, Australia’s Consul-General in Kolkata.
